Exploring the Meaning of Life and Escaping the Emptiness in Life
Today’s Verse
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
– Ecclesiastes 1:14
Thoughts on Today’s Verse…
Thousands of years ago, Solomon, the wisest king in history, enjoyed high status and great wealth in his life and had reputation, honor, and wisdom. In people’s eyes, he reached the peak of life, and he should feel content and happy, and live a meaningful life. However, he said, “I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit” (Ecclesiastes 1:14). This word is really worthy of our reflection.
Look at today’s mankind: Many people all think that as long as they have money and power, are admired by others, and enjoy physical pleasures, they live a happy and meaningful life. Therefore, they have worked hard for the sake of money, fame, and gain. Some people have gained what they want, but are they satisfied? Do they feel happy? Have they felt that their lives have meaning? No. In fact, they are troubled by an inexplicable feeling of emptiness in their hearts, and feel that life is very hard. What’s worse, after becoming successful and well-known, some people still can’t find joy in life; they feel their lives are meaningless and even commit suicide to bid farewell to the world and vent their dissatisfaction with life.
So why can’t people’s pursuit of wealth, fame, and gain meet their spiritual needs? Exactly what is the meaning of life? God’s words reveal the source of these problems. Just as a paragraph says, “In this world, regardless of whether you live in a free country or one without human rights, you are utterly incapable of escaping the fate of mankind. Whether you are the ruler or the ruled, you are utterly incapable of escaping the desire to explore the fate, mysteries, and destination of mankind, much less are you capable of escaping the bewildering sense of emptiness. Such phenomena, which are common to all of mankind, are called social phenomena by sociologists, yet no great man can come forth to solve such problems. Man, after all, is man, and the position and life of God cannot be replaced by any man. Mankind does not just require a fair society in which everyone is well-fed and is equal and free; what mankind needs is the salvation of God and His provision of life to them. Only when man receives God’s provision of life and His salvation can the needs, the yearning to explore, and the spiritual emptiness of man be resolved.”
We have seen that in this world dominated by Satan, people vie for fame and benefits, kill one another, and can’t resolve their spiritual emptiness no matter how much money or how high status they have. Only if we are saved by God and gain the supply of the truth can our spiritual emptiness be resolved, because truth can save man, purify man, be man’s life, and make man obey, worship, and love God. That is, after we understand the truth, we can obey God, know Him, and love Him, and we can live in the light and gain eternal life. How precious the truth is! Only if we pursue the truth and gain life can we be praised by God, and truly be satisfied in the depths of our hearts. After that, we can have real peace and joy, and live a meaningful life. Solomon said that under the sun was emptiness because he didn’t obtain the truth; the situation is the same for today’s people. So how should we pursue the truth so we can solve the emptiness of our hearts and live a meaningful life? You are welcome to contact us through the online chat window at the bottom of the website.
